Local Car Break-in Spree Case Makes Progress

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) received reports of 43 vehicle break-ins which occurred at numerous locations throughout Sunnyvale. Arrests were made within hours and the Department has been working to return recovered stolen property to the victims.

To date, Sunnyvale DPS has identified 28 victims from the following jurisdictions; five cases from Sunnyvale, 13 cases from San Jose, two cases from Santa Clara, four cases from Oakland and one case each from Palo Alto, San Ramon, Fremont, and Alameda. The Sunnyvale DPS thanked their allied agencies and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the investigation. The regional collaboration is crucial in addressing the epidemic car break-ins, in our communities.

The investigation is on-going and investigators are still attempting to identify and match 63 unclaimed items to the rightful owners. SDPS will continue to work with allied law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Detective Grant Smith at (408) 730-7128 or gsmith@sunnyvale.ca.gov.
