Sunnyvale police are searching for those responsible for murdering a local woman in her car.
Just after 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a call of a shooting, according to a DPS press release.
The incident occurred in the area near 1225 Vienna Drive in Sunnyvale. Upon arrival, police discovered the corpse of a woman in a vehicle.
Capt. Dzahn Le, the public information officer for DPS, wrote in an email that the woman was a San Jose resident. She was in her 20s.
Police are calling the shooting a homicide, in the press release published online Thursday of last week. The woman suffered gunshot wounds, according to the release, implying she was shot multiple times.
However, because DPS is still investigating, Le wrote that police are not disclosing additional information about the incident, including a possible motive, how many times — or where — the woman was shot or how long the woman was in her car before the arrival of police.
Prior to police arriving on scene, according to the release, the “suspect(s)” fled the area — making it unclear whether there was a single shooter or multiple.
As of Wednesday evening, police have not made any arrests associated with the killing.
Medical professionals pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The area, according to Zillow, is a family-friendly neighborhood with access to lots of parks and recreational amenities.
Sunnyvale police investigated one homicide in 2025, in May.
This is a developing story. The Weekly will update this article when police provide additional information.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Det. Eugene Rosette at (408) 730-7110.
