Football fans came from all over California, dressed in their finest, to celebrate the second of five group games scheduled for Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. This one featured Jordan and Austria, and neither team’s fans disappointed.
Kurt and Lisa brought their family of four from Orange, Calif. To attend the match. Kurt’s father hails from Austria and the family is part of an Austrian folk dance group, so knowing their favorite team was playing so close was something else.

“It’s once in a lifetime. We couldn’t miss it,” said Kurt.
For them and their kids, 8-year-old Kurt Ethan and 5-year-old Elisabeth, it’s a change from what they’re used to.
“We watch it on TV, but we’re here in real life,” said Lisa.
“We get to actually be here, not in our living room, in the stadium. It’s so exciting,” continued Kurt.
Enthusiastic fans of Austria were matched by the boisterous fans of Jordan. As the Cinderella pick of the tournament, the small country of Jordan drew fans from other countries as well.
“So excited, even it’s not our team, but we support Jordan,” said Tony, who came from San Francisco to enjoy the match.
“We’re not Jordanian, but we’re supporting Jordan. It’s the first time being in the World Cup, and they are representing the Arabs,” said his wife, Mary Rose. “[It’s a] big experience to have, to be in the U.S., and [at] the same time, we were able to get to watch the World Cup. It’s a big experience, and definitely my kids, they will remember later, we’ve been there for watching Jordan against any team, but just to support Jordan being in the first time in the World Cup.”
While Austria ultimately beat Jordan 3-1, fans of Jordan say the simple act of being there was well worth the journey.
