Weekly Staff

The first FIFA World Cup opening round match at Levi's Stadium was played on Saturday, bringing out fans of Qatar, Switzerland and the sport of football.

Saturday’s FIFA World Cup match at Levi’s Stadium delivered more than excitement on the pitch, as thousands of supporters transformed the American football venue into a celebration of global football culture with passionate fan engagement from the moment the gates opened.

Hours before kickoff between Qatar and Switzerland, fans draped in national colors filled the plazas surrounding the stadium, waving flags, singing chants and posing for photos with friends and family. The festive atmosphere showcased the diversity of the Bay Area and beyond, with supporters from around the world coming together to share in one of sport’s biggest spectacles.

Among them was Omar, who traveled from Dublin, Calif. to attend the event after decades of anticipation.

“I’ve been waiting since 1994 to be here,” Omar said. “I was at the last World Cup game at Stanford University in 1994.”

His story reflected the deep emotional connection many Bay Area fans have with the tournament, with some returning after more than three decades to relive cherished memories while creating new ones.

Inside the stadium, coordinated chants echoed through the stands while drums and scarves created a vibrant visual display. Swiss supporters dressed in red and traded friendly banter with Qatar fans, reflecting the tournament’s spirit of unity and international competition. Kids participated in interactive activities, while many fans took pictures for social media, capturing the special moments throughout the day.

The fan experience extended beyond the match itself. Food vendors offered international cuisine and the FIFA team stores saw steady traffic.  Volunteers and event staff helped direct visitors and created a welcoming environment for first-time Levi’s Stadium attendees.

For many attendees, the event represented more than a sporting contest; it was an opportunity to connect with cultures, reunite with fellow expatriates and introduce younger generations to the excitement of the FIFA World Cup. Conversations in multiple languages and spontaneous celebrations highlighted the tournament’s unique ability to unite people across borders.

As the final whistle approached, applause filled the stadium regardless of allegiance, underscoring the respect shared among everyone. Stories like Omar’s served as a reminder that for many fans, the World Cup is not just about the match on the field but the fulfillment of a lifelong journey and a celebration of how sports can bring people together.
