New Post Office Opening in Sunnyvale

A new post office is getting ready to open its doors in Sunnyvale. The new office is located in a small shopping complex at 510-C East El Camino Real near the intersection of El Camino Real and Fair Oaks Avenue.

“It’s going to provide the same service as the previous location,” said Kristina Uppal of the United States Postal Service (USPS). “There will be retail services, PO Box services and it’s going to be open same hours as previously. That’s 8:30 to 5, Monday through Friday.”

The new location was selected after the Postal Service lost its lease on the previous locaton at 141 South Taaffe St. near Downtown Sunnyvale. Much of the area around Taaffe is being redeveloped and the landlord decided not to renew its lease with the post office.

The 141 South Taaffe St. location is right next to CityLine Sunnyvale, a 36-acre mixed-use development that’s under construction. Earlier this year, the nearby Macy’s closed its location at 200 West Washington Ave.

“The lease was lost on that previous location, but seeing as how we’re getting more space and the location, I think it’s going to be an improvement for our customers,” said Uppal. “Much more accessible, more parking and that’s always a plus.”

The Postal Service held a public meeting in September 2018 to talk about the planned branch relocation and ultimately decided that a new location on East El Camino Real was the best option.

“I know the facility itself is larger, so that’s also another improvement,” said Uppal “Not only is everything going to be newer, it’s going to be larger than the previous facility.”

Since the location is larger, it allows the Postal Service to put 740 PO Boxes, as well as retail services in the space. It will not offer passport or package pick up services. Still, Uppal says customers are going to see a lot of benefits from this new location.

“I know what they’re excited about the most is the location. [It’s a] more accessible location,” said Uppal. “It’ll be near all the restaurants and stores so it’s going to be much more visible and accessible for the customers, so that is exciting. It’s going to have fresh look.”

While retail services will only be open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, there will be 24-hour access to all of the PO Boxes.

As of now, the only way to rent a box at the new location is to go into the store. However, when the new post office opens and the USPS website updates, you will be able to rent online as well at www.usps.com.

The new post office is expected to open by Aug. 1 of this year.
