Milestones – Salute to Our Service Clubs – Opinion

Rotary Park is a neighborhood playground located a block from Santa Clara City Hall. For decades, it has served hundreds of neighbors and their children. However, age has taken its toll, leading to the need for some work and a facelift.

Santa Clara Rotary Club, under the leadership of former Assistant Chief of Police and current president Dan Winter, decided it was time for renovation. A few weeks ago, over 50 Rotary members, working two separate shifts, injected new life into this well-known community landmark. The first group showed up at 10:00 AM and then took a break before the second shift arrived at noon. Both the morning workers and the afternoon shift joined together at noon to enjoy a short rib barbecue along with corn on the cob and tossed salad.

While Rotarians did a super job in bringing an update to the park, it would be great if city stepped in to complete the security of the park by providing additional fencing to protect children playing in the park.

Santa Clara Soroptimists is another community nonprofit service club that brings a lot to our city. The club is holding its now-famous fundraiser, the “Classy Bag Affaire,” on April 26 at the Marriott Hotel.

Club members have already sold over 200 tickets to the “Classy Bag Affaire.” Dozens of purses packed with goodies, prizes and surprises will be auctioned off to raise funds to support the service club’s scholarship program for women returning to school or the workforce and its holiday gift store.

The Santa Clara Woman’s Club has a Royal Tea fundraiser coming up on May 10 at the club’s adobe. Possibly the oldest service club in the city, one of its earliest activities was street beautification.

Today, the Woman’s Club supports many local nonprofits, maintains one of the city’s historic buildings and gives an annual nursing scholarship.

Kiwanis is another club that’s been active in the city for decades, providing recreational activities for kids. The South Bay Kiwanis clubs support the county-wide Special Games (not to be confused with Special Olympics), and give annual Turnaround Scholarships for students who have faced personal or familial difficulties, and are often forgotten by other scholarships.

Santa Clara continues to be a community that cares and is willing to invest in great causes.

Congratulations to Santa Clara’s service clubs. These organizations continue to unite community members, assist the underserved and have fun in the process. Their outreach is part of the Santa Clara Way: Do good work while bringing together community members to provide enjoyment and opportunities for our residents.
