Wilcox Chargers Claim Victory Under Friday Night Lights

Two of Santa Clara football teams took to the gridiron last Friday to battle it out in an exciting conference game at Santa Clara High School. Fans of both teams were out in full force to cheer on the players and the glow of school spirit kept spectators warm as the temperature dropped after sundown.

The Wilcox Chargers took a commanding lead out of the gate, scoring their first touchdown just a few minutes after kickoff. Wilcox junior wide receiver David Hernandez scored the first touchdown of the game after rushing 54 yards. Overall Wilcox picked up a lot of mileage with three players rushing for over 100 yards. Junior quarterback David Hernandez rushed for 169 yards during the game, and senior running back Richard Herrera kept busy, rushing for 182 yards on 12 carries and scoring two touchdowns.

Despite a daunting 42-7 score at halftime, the Santa Clara Bruins rallied in the second half. A solid pass to sophomore wide receiver Nick Garcia brought the final score to 58-28. With this victory, Wilcox continues their league streak 2-0, after a 50-14 win over Mountain View High School last week.

Wilcox Coach Paul Rosa tributes their success to preparation, “We played a very tough pre-season schedule and I think it has prepared us well for [SCVAL] League play. We also had a lot of key injuries early in the season, but we are getting healthy now,” he said.
