David Alexander, Larry Sacks

SC police are investigating after someone was killed on Enright Avenue on May 8, just a few houses away from a simultaneous house fire.

Santa Clara’s police and fire departments had their hands full with a shooting death and a house fire occurring simultaneously.

At about 12:30 p.m., May 8, the Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD) received a call that someone had been shot at a home on the 600 block of Enright Avenue in Santa Clara, SCPD announced on its alert system, Nixle.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a man in front of one of the homes there suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene.

At the same time, police also discovered a nearby home on fire. They called in the Santa Clara Fire Department (SCFD), who promptly dispatched two engines to the scene. Firefighters began working to extinguish the blaze. After about three hours, firefighters managed to get the fire under control.

SCPD also dispatched its SWAT team to the scene. A SWAT vehicle tore out the front window of one of the homes.

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) assisted SCPD with the investigation. DPS had a drone on scene.

Lt. Eric Lagergren, SCPD’s public information officer, said at the scene that police are still investigating the situation. Police do not yet know whether the fire and the shooting are connected, he said.

The shooter fled into one of the homes on Enright Avenue.

Audio from Ring camera footage, posted on Instagram, reveals that the shooter fired 13 shots.

The shooter remains at large, Lagergren said.

Police will provide additional updates as new information becomes available, Lagergren wrote in a followup statement. SCPD asks anyone with information related to this case to contact Detective Sergeant Bell at (408) 615-4814 or email him at DBell@santaclaraca.gov
