SCUSD is a leader in Reading Recovery. SCUSD utilized a Federal Grant to train 32 teachers in this highly researched approach proven to catch early struggling readers and set them on a course for success.
The community does not know the dedication, motivation and tenacity that the teachers who accepted this challenge committed to; all for helping students learn to read! All 32 teachers attended 4-5 hours of training weekly, voluntarily taught students a minimum of 2 hours every day beyond their work day, five days a week, for a year, for NO extra pay! They did this while also taking state pay reductions.
I was continually in awe at the dedication of these teachers who had a tremendous passion for the students. What set our district apart as great, was the staff! The community needs to become involved in supporting programs that teachers believe in enough to provide this level of dedication to our young people.
