Letter From ArLyne Diamond

Why aren’t we building more homes? The demand is greater than the supply.

Today I spoke with a woman who was complaining about the price of housing locally. When I mentioned that we needed more housing she exploded saying: “no more housing, just reduce prices so I could afford to continue to live here.”

I replied don’t you see that with more housing the prices will come down. “No, no more houses, it is too crowded already” she retorted.

Why are so many people against growth, but want everything growth creates? More businesses bring more taxes which allow for increased services. More people living near means more stores and restaurants and our choices in what we buy increases.

Yes, also more cars on the road. That’s the downside. But, have you considered that if more people lived near where they worked they could walk or bike to work and home?
