The number of Seattle Seahawks fans in the crowd and around Santa Clara this weekend was just as lopsided as the 29-13 score inside Levi’s Stadium. The 12s showed up for their team, rolling off VTA trolleys and right onto Tasman Drive with only a scant smattering of New England Patriots jerseys mixed in.
The flow of people from the trolleys was controlled and managed by VTA employees, ensuring easy access to the stadium. While there was a lot of discussion leading up to the event about the potential presence of ICE agents, ICE agents were nowhere to be seen on Super Bowl Sunday.
Santa Clara police officers, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Department of Homeland Security were all present. They were all unmasked and simply there to keep the peace.
People disembarking the trolleys were greeted with a variety of free speech messages outside of the security zone around Levi’s Stadium, including ones about religion, abortion and anti-ICE. However, tensions were low, and there were no confrontations along Tasman Drive before the game.
People moved freely, and so did undercover officers, who, more than once, caught people selling counterfeit merchandise. The wares were confiscated, and the sellers were sent on their way.

Just outside of the restricted area, Clara’s Junction appeared to be a landing spot for Seattle fans. A Seahawks bus was parked right outside, which caught the eye of Ellen from Minneapolis. She was in town to support her husband, who had a ticket to the game.
“He’s going with his best friend from Seattle. Otherwise, I would have gone if he couldn’t find someone to go with him because he had two tickets,” said Ellen. “I would gladly give up my space to a lifelong Seahawks fan.”
Outside of Clara’s Junction, several fans were on their phones before kickoff, hoping to snag a last-minute ticket. Ryan, who grew up in Tacoma, needed two, one for him and one for his new wife, even if it meant going in at 3:15 or 3:30.
“No, no, we’re going together,” said Ryan. “We came from Georgia.”
Friends Dan and Eduardo were also outside Clara’s Junction before gametime hunting the apps for tickets.
“Gotta be near the stadium to buy the ticket, be ready to go inside,” said Dan. “Using up all my phone battery and hoping for the best.”
“We both have like a number now that we’re comfortable paying and the tickets are around there,” said Eduardo. “So, at 2:30, if we don’t find anything below that number, we’ll just buy the cheapest one at them, which is still kind of close to our number.”
