Power To Your Voice

Santa Clara this Week

“Barbara Allen”
Friday, May 12th, 8 p.m.
The Santa Clara Chorale premiers the oratorio “Barbara Allen,” by contemporary composer Scott Gendel, featuring soprano soloist Sarah Brailey and tenor Brian Thorsett.
This new work takes the traditional folk ballad as a starting point for a wild, nearly operatic, journey that uses a huge array of musical textures to expand “Barbara Allen” into an emotional tour-de-force. Joining with the San José Chamber Orchestra and the Santa Clara University Choirs, the Chorale embarks on a symphonic exploration of love and loss in a musical experience that brings oratorio into a new realm. Tickets are $5-$32. www.scc.org/concerts.html. Mission Santa Clara de Asis–500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara.
