Why AB-331: Ethnic Studies is Important – Letter to the Editor

The majority of the kids in my AP United States History class are students of color. It is disappointing how despite the diversity in the room, we never get to hear about the history of our ethnic backgrounds. Now, more than ever, conversations about systemic racism are crucial to changing the culture in both schools and society. In order to move forward, students need to have an education on the history of race in America, both past and present. This understanding is essential for us if we are to make well-informed political decisions in the future. AB-331: Ethnic Studies is a bill that will promote an understanding of diversity, leading to a society that recognizes and values various perspectives. And as a student, this is bill that directly affects me and other future students to come.
