Letter to the Editor

Hello. I am a longtime resident of the Ponderosa Park neighborhood in Sunnyvale. Since September, my neighbors and I have been subjected to the excessively loud, offensive sound of muscle cars with illegal mufflers speeding down Lawrence Expressway between El Camino and 101 throughout the day and night. I am unable to eat, sleep, work from home, carry a conversation, read a book, or even think without being disrupted by the roaring sound of these selfish drivers. It has worsened my everyday functioning to the extent that I been reduced to tears, desperate for relief, and have seriously considered leaving the area entirely. I have reached out to the Sunnyvale and Santa Clara public safety departments and city councils, the county sheriff, and my district supervisor, and so far have not seen any meaningful action taken to address this ongoing public health concern. Noise pollution is known to cause psychological distress and heart disease, and can cause cognitive impairment in children, so this problem does not just affect me, but the entire community. Isn’t there anything more that can be done?

Sincerely,

A desperate citizen
