Letter to the Editor

As a newly retired public school principal, I have more time to get my steps in at Valley Fair, my favorite indoor walking location.

While strolling through Valley Fair’s new concourse today, I was struck by the enormity of two large murals advertising ICHINA, a restaurant opening in the Spring of 2021.

As I examined the air brushed depiction of patrons seated in and walking by the restaurant, I was struck by what appeared to be an absence of black and brown faces.

If I, a white man, was troubled by this absence in the ICHINA advertisements, how must those who were left out feel?

Hopefully, it was an inadvertent omission. I hate to think that the black and brown faces were deliberately left out because they don’t represent the target clientele for this new upscale restaurant.
