Letter from Michelle Lam

Advertisements seem to easily trick people into believing anything. This is commonly seen when it comes to mentholated cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

Menthol cigarettes provide a cooling sensation, but they still harm crucial organs and cause dangerous diseases. Research has suggested that menthol smokers have a more difficult time to quit smoking, since they are more addictive compared to traditional cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are displayed as a safer alternative and a way to quit smoking. E-cigarettes still contain harmful substances found in traditional cigarettes, like nicotine. Many of which can lead to precarious diseases and negatively impact the brain development of youth. The FDA has not approved e-cigarettes as a way to quit smoking. Therefore, this alternative has done more harm than good.

It is important to understand that these alternatives only cause more health problems. We need to develop a policy that eliminates the sale and distribution of these detrimental products.
