Duty of Dads – Letter to the Editor

The measure of a man consists in fulfilling his duty to others. We don’t have many men in America today. His first duty is to parents. Boys are notoriously disrespectful of both. Next is duty to siblings, relatives, friends, teachers, classmates, employers, colleagues, clientele, wife, children, the land and its creatures. His duty often flags in these areas. Duty to humanity is partly fulfilled through occupation, but many men enter illegitimate trades. Some go into public work like law enforcement, firefighting, military, teaching, media, government. This is good, but every man in a democracy must find a way to contribute to developing the whole community outside of paid work, outside even church. A man can accomplish all this only if he puts aside fulltime pursuit of pleasure and entertainment. How and when exactly is that going to happen in America?
