Letters To The Editor

Since the start of the stay-at-home order more than 6 months ago, I’ve noticed a large homeless encampment on Wolfe Road, marked by blue tarp, bikes, and trash bags. In addition to already-existing issues of food insecurity, the homeless are now faced with new predicaments: COVID-19 and poor air quality. Without access to reliable health care and testing centers, their lives are in jeopardy. I’ve become acutely aware of the struggles they face, a world of hardship, pain, and suffering that is challenging to even imagine. I’m hopeful, however, that we can use the next few months to develop affordable housing solutions. Living in Silicon Valley, a hub for innovation and technological ingenuity, I think we have a responsibility to use our collective talent for social good, creating opportunities for the less fortunate.

We need Mrs. Bonnie Lierberman’s voice in our School Board! She has a tract record as former PTA President and School Site Council representative of advocating for ALL students, families and teachers. I have seen Mrs. Lierberman in action and know she is the voice we need in our board.

I am an eighth-grader at Peterson Middle School and have known Bonnie Lieberman for 9 years. I have seen how dedicated she is to this community and believe she will create lots of positive change as a board member. As a student, I believe Bonnie has my and my fellow peers' best interests at heart. I endorse Bonnie Lieberman for SCUSD School Board 2020.

With 2020 being the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which permitted women to vote, I'm seeing a pattern of racial erasure in our narrative of suffragette history in that the 19th Amendment only gave white women the right to vote. In fact, many suffragettes were against Black suffrage, and even allied themselves with eugenicists, whose beliefs were highly racist. Black women were not given the right to vote until 1965. Because of this, I have mixed feelings about glorifying white suffragette heroes like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Is it really doing us any favors to ignore the side of suffragette history that we don't want to see?

The Endorsement Game When I ran for school board, I was a little surprised by the endorsement game among politicians and quickly learned that individual endorsements often (but not always) had very little to do with the qualifications of the individual, voting history, or political views. Sometimes, it was just about who asked first. However, endorsements by organizations are another matter. These are based on lengthy questionnaires, interviews, and sometimes an investigation in voting history/past statements. These are done by a panel or sometimes voted on by a group. In the school board race for Santa Clara Unified School District, we are starting to see the results from these organizations. Who did the SCUSD teachers choose? Bonnie Lieberman Albert Gonzalez Andrew Knaack Who did the Sunnyvale Democratic Club choose? Bonnie Lieberman Albert Gonzalez Andrew Knaack Pay attention to these endorsements.

I encourage a vote to re-elect Mark Richardson for SCUSD School Board November 3. I value Mark’s practical approach to serving students and families. He is a long time advocate for students in need. Having thought about it, I think what these professional athletes are doing is both thoughtful and courageous. Both Dr. King and Gandhi urged noncooperatiin as a method to make it clear that oppression and racism must end, so these athletes need to be encouraged. We can all put our salted peanuts away and realize these players want the killing to end. We need to tell the NFL and businesses like Republic Urban, colleges like SCU, to act to end racist actions or no cooperation. It is about life and liberty so I will take a knee to salute them and call out people for not treating people like people. Time for us all to pay attention and support these efforts.
