Elderly Woman Hit, Killed Crossing Kiely Boulevard

Santa Clara Police are looking for witnesses after a driver hit and killed a pedestrian crossing Kiely Boulevard between Barcells Avenue and Steinhart Court around 3 p.m. on Nov. 30.

Officers say 84-year-old Thi Lan was crossing the street outside of the crosswalk when she was hit and killed by a Dodge Charger going south on Kiely. The driver was a 20-year-old woman who stayed on the scene and cooperated with investigators.

There is no word on why Lan was crossing the street, though officers believe she lived in the neighborhood with family members. There is a bus stop located less than a block from where Lan crossed.

The investigation is ongoing but officers say initial reports indicate the driver of the car was not at fault and visibility did not appear to be an issue.

  • She was crossing the street to get to the other side, where there are bus stops and a Safeway and CVS and Wells Fargo. I saw her just before she was hit, and she had stopped to wait for a northbound minivan who, technically speaking, should have stopped to let her cross by California law. Many comments say she was jaywalking and even the police report says she was "not in a crosswalk", but she was in an intersection which is by California law defined as a crosswalk regardless of whether it's painted. They even spent a ton of taxpayer money to make each of these corners ADA compliant - I can't imagine trying to cross this crazy road in a wheelchair! The actual marked crosswalks are at Homestead and Forbes, a fair distance from where she was hit, and I was once hit in the Homestead one while crossing on a walk light. Some comments on the other sites are absolutely uncalled for!
