Milestones – More Opportunity – Opinion

Publisher Miles Barber says with the World Cup coming to town, it's a chance for Santa Clara to get some recognition.

There is no question that a Super Bowl is huge and ranks right up there as a top event in sports and attendance. Unfortunately, Mayor Lisa Gillmor fumbled the ball on that one and any chance Santa Clara would get recognition.

However, there is another event coming that is even bigger, more attended, with wider coverage and greater money-making opportunities.

The World Cup!

You do not have to be a soccer fan to be a beneficiary of what the World Cup brings to Santa Clara. The spillover to our community can and should be huge, with or without city politics.

Bigger than championship playoffs, the Kentucky Derby or the World Series, the World Cup is coming to Levi’s Stadium and Santa Clara.

Wouldn’t it be great for Santa Clara to lay out the welcome mat as opposed to throwing in a wet towel?

Our community has demonstrated a huge heart when it comes to raising funds for the city, the residents and the many less fortunate. The Santa Clara Soroptimist Club holds the Classy Bag Affaire, which raises funds to assist women returning to the workforce.

Santa Clara Rotary has done numerous fundraising events, including the huge Barbeque Championships. The funds they have raised provide scholarships, tuition for students and community projects, including Rotary Park.

While COVID closed down the ongoing success for so many community events, there remains an underlying movement to resurrect more of these incredible fundraising events.

Residents ask me often, “When will Rotary bring back the Barbeque Championships?” And that answer is not easy. Putting on any event relies on volunteers and interested residents.

Our service clubs lost more than events due to COVID; they lost members who were available to volunteer their time, energy and ideas.

If you have even had a fleeting thought of joining a service club and offering an hour or two for community service, consider joining a Santa Clara service club.

In cooperation with the city, our service clubs are ready and available to roll out the welcome mat to the thousands coming to the World Cup.

While we have heard little about the World Cup from our mayor or city council, there is plenty of opportunity for our council to invite ideas from community groups and residents.

Now, a few words to acknowledge the death of Rod Diridon, who was a visionary. His contribution to our community was abundant. Evidence of his talent and vision is prevalent throughout Silicon Valley. Diridon Station stands as a testament to Rod’s significant contributions, reflecting his dedicated efforts to advance transportation innovation.

We will miss you Rod, and God’s embrace as you have now traveled to a new home in a new way to create new things.
