Four-Sport Star Victoria Calvillo Doubling Up this Spring Season

Santa Clara junior Victoria Calvillo is playing softball and running track this spring with the help of her two coaches.

The saying goes that you can’t be in two places at once, but as far as high school athletics go, Santa Clara Bruins star Victoria Calvillo might just be the exception to that rule. A volleyball player in the fall, and a basketball player in the winter, Calvillo saves her incredible Houdini act for last when she spends the spring competing simultaneously on both the softball diamond and the track team. Oh, and she’s doing both after recovering from a broken leg this past July.

While July was certainly not kind to the teenager, Calvillo’s double-dipping this spring wouldn’t be possible without the kindness from a pair of Julies. Legendary Santa Clara Track Coach Julie L’Heureux, and Bruins Head Softball Coach Julie Kawamoto have worked together to allow their speedy star to split her practice time. Calvillo’s parents, Marc and Roxanne Calvillo, expressed their sincere appreciation for the two coaches allowing their daughter to participate in both spring sports.

“It has been very positive,” noted Victoria’s mother, Roxanne Calvillo on their relationship with the coaches. “I was a little worried about the burnout with her schedule, but the coaches have been very supportive. Coach Julie with track was just excited to have her just whenever they could get her because she plays such an important role with the team and same with Julie in softball. It has been a pretty positive outcome, we’re happy with it.”

If anyone can survive a hectic athletic schedule, running back and forth from team to team, it’s a leadoff hitter with track-star speed.

“In the morning, before I get to school, I text both my coaches to which practice I should go to first,” chimed the junior center fielder and track sprinter. “Sometimes it’s one or the other based on if there is a track meet the next day or a softball game the next day. Typically, I go to softball for like an hour, and then I’ll run over to the track to do my track activities after.”

While the schedule is chaotic, the competition schedule for games and meets actually makes Calvillo’s double-sport season possible. The big track meets typically don’t conflict with softball games.

“I talked with both coaches before the season to discuss which days I would be available or have to skip softball for track meets,” noted Calvillo, “Only three games conflicted with track meets and fortunately none of them were against our biggest rivals.”

While the schedule has allowed Calvillo to enjoy being on both teams, the question remains: does the softball team’s energizer bunny at the top of their order ever get tired?

“I do get tired,” chuckled Calvillo when asked about her exhaustion levels. “But honestly, I love the thrill of always staying busy. I am a very schedule-based person, I like to keep track of what I’m doing and always have something to do next. Not only is it that I love being active, but I love the relationships that I have built throughout the season with every sport. I love that I have those people around me.”

The fleet of foot Calvillo will happily slow down for her coaches, teammates, friends, and family members, but to her opponents … well, best of luck to y’all, catch her if you can.
